Learning Arabic from scratch: first steps and tips
Arabic looks hard to many people: a different script, writing from right to left, unfamiliar sounds. In fact, if you start in the right order, you can learn to read within the first months.
1. The alphabet and correct reading
- The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters, and it is written from right to left.
- Many letters change shape depending on their position in a word (start, middle, end) — practise this from the first weeks.
- Short vowels are shown with marks — beginners start reading texts that include them.
- Sounds that don't exist in Uzbek (for example “ع”, “ح”, “ق”) are best learned with a teacher, by listening and repeating — correct pronunciation is hard to learn from a book.
2. Writing
Spend a little time every day writing letters and words by hand. Handwriting helps you remember the letters faster.
3. Vocabulary and simple sentences
- Start with everyday words: كِتَابٌ — book, قَلَمٌ — pen, بَيْتٌ — house, مَدْرَسَةٌ — school.
- Build simple sentences: هٰذَا كِتَابٌ — “This is a book”.
- Learn words inside sentences, not on their own — you'll remember them faster.
4. Grammar — step by step
Arabic grammar is systematic: most words are built from a three-letter root. For example, from the root كَتَبَ (“he wrote”) come words like كِتَابٌ (book) and مَكْتَبٌ. Once you understand this system, guessing new words becomes easier.
The most common mistakes
- Moving on to grammar before mastering the alphabet.
- Only reading, without writing or speaking.
- Long breaks — learning a little but regularly is more effective.
